As a rule the body forms the semi-essential amino acid cysteine from l-methionine, but a lot can go wrong with this conversion process. In addition, factors such as surgery, diet, rapid growth or strenuous exercise can cause a semi-essential amino acid to become essential. The rate at which our bodies absorb the amino acid then falls short of our needs. To ensure that the body has enough cysteine available under such circumstances, supplementation with NAC 600 offers a valuable solution.
Acetyl is in fact a molecule part, so the acetyl group is not a molecule in itself. We can draw the comparison with an arm or a leg, very functional within the whole of a body, but worthless on its own. Nevertheless, the coupling of acetyl with cysteine has great value within our body. Three properties of the molecule ensure a more efficient passage through the cell membrane.
Acetyl is a lipid-like compound, which allows the intestine to absorb the molecule as a whole. In addition, the acetyl bond protects the molecule against oxidation, which results in rapid diffusion into the cell. Subsequently, the enzymes present in the cell can split the bond at lightning speed. This allows the body to absorb n-acetyl-l-cysteine properly, in contrast to regular cysteine.
Glutathione is a compound of three amino acids (tripeptide), which the body produces from cysteine, glutamine and glycine. The last two are highly accessible through dietary intake, making them not problematic factors for glutathione formation. Cysteine, on the other hand, is more difficult to obtain from food, making it the limiting factor in this compound. Furthermore, cysteine is the active part of the glutathione molecule.
But if glutathione is so important to me, why don't I just take glutathione? Research shows that the body does not absorb (reduced) glutathione. The gastrointestinal tract simply destroys the nutrient. Even doses of three grams do not increase glutathione levels in the body (see graph below). And since our bodies do absorb the acolyte form of cysteine, supplementation with the precursor of glutathione is more effective than taking (reduced) glutathione.
